Venus Williams of the United States will face Zarina Diyas in the First Round of the 2021 Miami Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday March 23rd, 2021 at 1:30pm EST.
This is perhaps the pick of the First Round Matches here at the WTA-1000 Event at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The two players are relatively close to each other in the rankings. Who will win and advance to the Second Round here?
Venus Williams is a former world number one who now finds herself ranked at #79 in the WTA Tour rankings. Still playing at a high level at the astonishing age of 40, she will be looking to turn what has been a poor 2021 season around, as she seeks to have some solid results before the end of her career. She has played two tournaments this year, at the Yarra Valley Classic and the Australian Open, losing in the Second Round of both events. Venus has slowed down a bit at this stage of her career but still possesses a huge serve, and penetrating groundstrokes when fit, and will be confident here of overcoming an opponent she has beaten before.
Like her opponent, Zarina Diyas has also gotten off to a slow start on the year. She is currently ranked #89, but has been as high as #31 and will undoubtedly looking to return to those heights. After a poor start to the year, she has improved since, reaching the Third Round both at the Australian Open and the Philipp Island Trophy. She has a very solid baseline game without many weapons of not, but is a particularly quick mover. With Williams' own movement declining at this stage, Diyas can look to take advantage of that mismatch and enters this match as the slight favorite.
This match really can go either way, between two ladies similarly ranked and in similar form. While it is tough to go against the three time Miami champion Venus Williams here, I do believe that Diyas will win this match. She has the big advantage in fitness and movement, but also has played a lot more tennis this season than her opponent. Williams is not the player she once was and will lose this match in two tight sets.
