Top seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia will face Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu in the Second Round of the 2021 Miami Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday March 26th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined.
This is a "David vs. Goliath" match between one of the best players in the world and a journeyman that spends most of his time on the Challenger Tour. Can the unseeded Lu caus one of the most stunning upsets ever seen at the Miami Open? Or will the Russian win as expected and continue in his quest for a fourth ATP-1000 title?
Daniil Medvedev is the new world #2 player, surpassing Rafael Nadal a week ago. He is the top seed here at the 2021 Miami Open after the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, and is considered the betting favorite for the title here. Apart from a meltdown in Rotterdam where he lost in the First Round, he has been outstanding in 2021, reaching the Australian Open Final and winning the title two weeks ago in Marseille. His game is perfectly suited to these hard courts, and his unique blend of strong defense and attack will be very hard to beat here. Once he can stay focused and not be distracted by outside influences, he will be very difficult to stop here in Miami.
Yen-Hsun Lu is currently ranked #1020 in the world and has entered this event by virtue of his protected ranking. Now 37 years of age, he mainly plies his trade on the Challenger Circuit, with only three ATP matches to his name so far in 2021. Once ranked as high as #37 in the world, he is a very capable player but at this stage of his career he will not pose much of a threat to the world number two. He was outstanding in his First Round win over Sam Querrey, returning very well and winning in straight sets. He will have taken a lot of confidence from that win, however it is unlikely that will be enough.
This match will have only one outcome, and that is a straight sets win for Daniil Medvedev. Simply put, he is a much better player than his Taiwanese opponent and should have no problems cruising into the Third Round here at the 2021 Miami Open.
