Aryna Sabalenka (7) meets Veronika Kudermetova (32) in the third round of the 2021 Miami Open on Saturday, March 27th 2021.
Will Veronika Kudermetova be able to cause the upset against the very experienced and determined Aryna Sabalenka, or will Sabalenka come out here looking to win this match in easier fashion than her second round match?
Veronika Kudermetova beat the in form American Danielle Collins in straight sets in the second round, beating her 6-3/6-2. Kudermetova is a very strong player on her day, but she also lacks consistency in backing up strong performances. Kudermetova has both a good serve, and a solid return game, which allows her to see opportunities in many different ways. Veronika will have to know that although she cruised through her second round match here, the job is not done. She now meets a very tough opponent in Aryna Sabalenka, and she will have to be on top of her game if she is going to be able to win here.
Aryna Sabalenka put on a very solid comeback performance in the second round, coming back from a 6-0 first set to beat Tsvetana Pirinkova in 3 sets 0-6/6-3/7-6. Sabalenka just needed to get used to the conditions here in Miami in that first set, and it is understandable that she lost it in that fashion. In the next two sets, Sabalenka was able to maintain her composure in the very tight moments. Sabalenka is one of the toughest opponents to meet on the WTA Tour, but will she be able to ensure she lives up to that in the third round?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the head to head 1-0. Both players know eachothers game a lot as they were doubles partners for a very long time, and they have won many titles together. However, I see that Aryna Sabalenka will be able to perform strongly from the get go in this match. Sabalenka is the much better player, and when she is determined, it is hard to see her lose to a much lower ranked player. Aryna Sabalenka to win.
