Ashleigh Barty (1) meets Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of the 2021 Miami Open on Saturday, March 27th 2021.
Will Jelena Ostapenko be able to cause the upset on Saturday against the World No.1, or will Ashleigh Barty continue to gain momentum here in Miami as she wants to get back on top of her game?
Ashleigh Barty came through a very tight 3-set match against Kristina Kucova in the second round, beating her 6-3/4-6/7-5. Barty was a bit rusty in that match and it was not a shock as she has only played 3 tournaments in the last year and a half. Barty will want to continue improving here in Miami, making sure that she is on top of her game, and in the best place to retain her title. Barty will meet a very tough opponent in Jelena Ostapenko, and she will have to work hard to prevent the upset in the third round.
Jelena Ostapenko beat Karolina Flipkens in the second round, beating the Belgian in 3 sets 6-2/5-7/6-3. Ostapenko, when on top of her game, is one of the toughest players to beat on the WTA Tour as she is able to move around the court with incredible speed, getting lots of balls back into court. Ostapenko has had to deal with lots of injury and consistency issues over the last few years, but I am sure she will be looking for a redemption season in 2021. Can Ostapenko cause the upset here to get some confidence behind her?
This is going to be the 4th meeting between both players, with Ashleigh Barty leading the head to head 2-1. Their encounters have always been very tight and they both know what to do against eachother to win. I expect a tight match here, with both players winning a set. But at the end of the day, it is hard to back against the World No.1 Ashleigh Barty. Barty was of course rusty, but she is getting back on top of her game, and she will fight through a fair few tight matches along the way. Ashleigh Barty to win.
