Nikoloz Basilashvili (4) meets Jozef Kovalik in the second round of the 2021 Sardegna Open on Wednesday, April 7th 2021.
Will Jozef Kovalik be able to come out here and cause the upset in the second round to make his way to the quarter finals, or will Nikoloz Basilashvili come out as strongly as he did a few weeks ago in Qatar?
Nikoloz Basilashvili will be looking to get himself back on the winning train as he has lost his last two matches in tournaments, losing in his two first matches in Dubai and in Miami. However, it has not all been bad news for the Georgian, as he is coming off of one of his best title wins in a long time, winning the Qatar Open a few weeks ago, and beating Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut along the way. Basilashvili has a lot of experience on the ATP Tour and he will want to use this to get back to winning ways here in Sardegna I am sure.
Jozef Kovalik put on a great comeback performance in the first round, beating Sumit Nagal in 3 sets, 3-6/6-1/6-3. Kovalik has a lot of experience in the tennis world, but mainly on the Challenger Tour circuit. However, Kovalik was happy with his first round draw as he did not face a very tough opponent just yet. Kovalik was able to maintain his composure during the very tight moments, eventually winning and booking himself a spot in the second round. Kovalik will have to raise his level however as he meets a tough opponent in Nikoloz Basilashvili.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and we are in for a very exciting encounter in the second round. Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, however, Nikoloz Basilashvili has been playing some good tennis in the last few weeks. Basilashvili will not let himself lose 3 matches in a row, especially after he won a title in Qatar. Jozef Kovalik is a good player, but does not have the experience and talent of Basilashvili. Nikoloz Basilashvili to win.
