Third seeded Casper Ruud of Norway will face unseeded Italian Gianluca Mager in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Andalucia Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday April 8th, 2021.
This is set to be an exciting match and one tennis fans will not want to miss. Both players are at home on the clay court surface and have similar game styles. While this may seem like a mismatch on paper, it will be closer than the rankings suggest, as the unfancied Mager actually leads the head to head series between the two players after winning in Buenos Aires last year. Can he cause the upset here at the 2021 Andalucia Open?
Casper Ruud is currently ranked #26 and is one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour. After a bright start to his career, winning his first ATP title in Rio de Janeiro last year, he has largely failed to replicate that success mainly due to injury. He is now hopefully recovered, and ready to make a run at the title here where he is considered one of the main contenders. A very good mover, he is equally comfortable attacking and defending, and will be looking to dominate this match from the baseline with his powerful groundstrokes.
Gianluca Mager is currently ranked #91 in the world but is a very good player, especially on clay. The Italian has built some strong momentum heading into the 2021 Andalucia Open, winning the Challenger event here in Marbella, Spain last week. His confidence will be sky high, and that win coupled with the fact that he has beaten his opponent before opens the possibility up of an upset here. Mager is a very solid baseline player with a huge forehand and a strong serve. If Ruud is not fully fit as has been the case all season then he certainly has a chance here. He enters this match as the underdog but will be very confident and capable of causing the upset here.
This match will almost certainly be very close, and will be a battle to the very end. Despite Mager being in better form and leading the head to head, I am going with Casper Ruud here. Once he is fully fit then he should be able to control this match as he has more high level experience than his opponent. Mager will keep it interesting, but expect Ruud to eventually wear him down and get the win here.
