Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Yannick Hanfmann in the quarter finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open on Friday, April 9th 2021.
Will Yannick Hanfmann come out here and knock out one of the top seeds here in Sardegna, or will Lorenzo Sonego continue to cruise through his matches in his home country?
Yannick Hanfmann was able to beat a once very strong player in Marco Cecchinato in his second round match, beating him in straight sets 7-5/6-1. Hanfmann is a very unknown player but he can definitely cause some issues against big name players as he loves playing on clay. Hanfmann has beaten two top players here in Sardegna and he will be very determined to do the same in the quarter finals by beating one of the title favourites in Lorenzo Sonego. How will the big swinging German fare against the very quick and flamboyant Italian in this quarter final in Sardegna?
Lorenzo Sonego destroyed the very skilled and experienced veteran Gilles Simon in the second round, winning in straight sets 6-4/6-1. Sonego was on top of the match right from the start, and not giving up any cheap points. Simon is obviously nowhere near the level he used to be at a few years and decade ago, but he is still a tough opponent to beat on his day. Sonego will be very determined to impress here in Sardegna as he is now one of the top seeds remaining and will want to give himself a strong shot at the title.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is definitely going to be a very tight encounter. Both players can win this if they are on top of their game, especially with both of them having won big matches in the last year. However, when it actually comes down to business, I see Lorenzo Sonego being willing to give more effort in this match as he is playing in his home country. Sonego will come out here very determined and he will book himself a spot in the semi finals of the Sardegna Open.
