Sixteenth seeded Cristian Garin of Chile will face unseeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the First Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters event in Monaco. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday April 12th, 2021.
This is the pick of the First Round matches between two very talented young players. Will it be the clay court specialist Garin advancing here? Or can young sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime get the minor upset on this surface?
Cristian Garin is currently the number 20 ranked player in the world and has established himself as one of the best clay courters over the past few years. While he hasn't had the greatest start to his 2021 season, he will be glad to get back onto the clay and is hoping to find some form. His elite movement on the surface coupled with heavy topspin groundstrokes allow him to compete with the world's best, and he should be considered a dark horse candidate to win this event. He has won five ATP titles on the surface throughout his short career and enters this match as the favorite.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is ranked just two spots lower at #22 and has long been considered one of the most exciting young talents in the world. He has traditionally had more success on the hard courts, but has recently added Toni Nadal to his team. Toni Nadal famously coached his nephew Rafael Nadal to numerous Grand Slam titles, and FAA will be hoping that this partnership will allow him to be much more successful on this surface, as well as finally breaking his run in ATP Finals, losing 7 without that elusive first title. His big serve and dynamic game make him a threat even on this surface, but it remains to be seen if he can hang with the Chilean consistently.
This has the potential to be a tremendous match, and I expect it to go the distance. Both players have had inconsistent starts to their seasons and will be seeking a deep run here. All things considered, I am going with Cristian Garin to get the win here. He is the superior player on this surface and while FAA is capable of getting the win, the smart money is on the Chilean.
