Second seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini will face unseeded Taro Daniel of Japan in the Semi-Final of the 2021 Serbia Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday April 24th, 2021 at 12:20pm EST.
This is a very surprising Semi here in Belgrade, as not many would have expected Taro Daniel to be here. Can he continue his hot streak and advance to the Final here? Or will eavy favorite Matteo Berrettini win as expected, reaching his first Final of the year?
Matteo Berrettini is the second seed here at the 2021 Serbia Open and is currently ranked #10 in the ATP world rankings. He has struggled hugely with loss of form and fitness so far in 2021, but has seemingly regained some of that here. He also reached the Semi-Finals of the doubles event here in Belgrade, showing that his fitness is back to 100%. He has been hugely impressive so far, defeating two difficult opponents in Marco Cecchinato and Filip Krajinovic in straights sets, and is the huge favorite to win this match over Taro Daniel. who is ranked over 100 spots behind him.
Taro Daniel is currently ranked #115 in the ATP world rankings, but is a former world number 64. A very solid baseline player, he has seen his ranking slide over the past few years and currently finds himself playing on the Challenger Circuit on occasion. He will have been delighted to reach his first ATP Semi-Final in quite some time, and fully deserves to be here. He had an impressive win over John Millman in the Round of 16 before defeating Delbonis in the Quarter-Finals, coming from a break down in the third set to win the match. He starts as the huge underdog here, but after the week he's had will be very confident.
Despite Taro Daniel being in his best form in quite some time, there will only be one outcome here. Matteo Berrettini is the far superior player and should win this match comfortably. The Italian is prone to lose focus at times, but is experienced enough to regroup and should advance to the Final here at the 2021 Serbia Open without too much trouble.
