Andrey Rublev (6) meets Tommy Paul in the second round of the 2021 Madrid Open on Tuesday, May 4th 2021.
Will Tommy Paul come out here ready to make a bigger name for himself by causing the upset, or will Andrey Rublev show us why he is one of the best players on the ATP Tour?
Tommy Paul beat the Spaniard, Pedro Martinez, in straight sets 6-4/7-5, showing us that he is able to maintain his composure during some very tight moments. Tommy Paul is still young and still has a long way to go on the ATP Tour, but he is nowhere near the level of his class of players around his age, such as Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev, and even Rublev. Will Tommy Paul change that perception here in Madrid by causing the biggest upset of his career by beating a Top 10 player for the first time against a very solid player?
Andrey Rublev will be very ready to turn the jets on here in Madrid as he has been able to rest for the last week, getting his game ready to deal with some of the best players on the ATP Tour. Andrey Rublev is so hard to deal with on any surface as he just speeds up the game so much, and he is able to move his opponents around the court with ease, always keeping them moving and tiring them out. Will Andrey Rublev have a great week in Madrid as he looks to continue to dominate?
This is going to be the 3rd meeting between both players, with Andrey Rublev never having lost to Tommy Paul. They have met on clay last year and Rublev won in 3 sets. However, since then, Andrey is becoming a tougher player to beat, and I am very sure he will not let the match go very far once again. Andrey will want to minimise his time on court to ensure that he is able to keep his energy for the later rounds where he will have to have enough energy to keep up with tougher players he will meet.
