Roberto Bautista Agut (9) meets John Isner in the second round of the 2021 Madrid Open on Wednesday, May 5th 2021.
Will John Isner come out here and show us that he can get some very big victories under his belt both on clay, and at this stage of his career, or will RBA be able to fight his way through yet another tight match?
John Isner was able to beat Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round in straight sets 6-4/7-6. Isner's serve was firing, and shockingly on clay, the American was able to keep the rallies quite short, and when the balls came back, he was also able to keep his composure during the very tight moments. However, I am not sure how he will be able to handle the game of RBA who is a much better returner than Miomir Kecmanovic. But if there is anyone who can get through a tight match, it is John.
RBA had to maintain his composure against a very tough clay court player aiming to make his return in Marco Cecchinato, beating the Italian in 3 tight sets 6-2/6-7/6-2. RBA was serving for the match in the second set, and was up in the tiebreak as well, but Cecchinato was able to keep his composure and actually get himself back in the match. However, RBA, with the help of the local Spanish crowd, had still the fans and the momentum behind him, which allowed him to eventually get the very important break towards the end of the third set.
This is going to be the 6th meeting between both players, with John Isner leading the head to head 3 to 2. They have always had very tight encounters, however, they have never met on clay. RBA knows he needs to play better than he did in the first round, but I am sure he will be very confident in his ability that he can get on top of this match as he is the much better rallier out of him and John Isner. It will definitely be a tight match, but one which RBA will win.
