Richard Gasquet vs. Jaume Munar
May 27, 2021 10:00 am EDT
Richard Gasquet (5) meets Jaume Munar in the quarter finals of the 2021 Parma Open on Thursday, May 27th 2021.
Will Jaume Munar be able to make his way far here in Parma by beating another experienced Frenchman, or will Richard Gasquet be able to show everyone that he is back and improving on the ATP Tour?
Jaume Munar did not have to finish his match against Benoit Paire in the second round as Paire retired when he was a set and a break down due to an injury concern. Jaume Munar played very well throughout the match and he should be confident in his game. However, playing Benoit Paire is not always a good benchmark to compare yourself to as the Frenchman is a tanker consistently nowadays on the ATP Tour. This means that Jaume Munar needs to still be critical of himself and aim to improve his game.
Richard Gasquet has been strong here in Parma, beating the likes of Daniel Altmaier and Pedro Martinez. Gasquet beat Pedro Martinez in the second round in 3 sets 6-3/3-6/6-3, and he was able to keep his composure during the tight moments early on in the third set. Richard Gasquet has a very flamboyant game and it is great to see him playing at a high level again. Richard will know that the more strong minutes he gets on court here in Parma, the better chance he has to impress at the French Open next week. Hopefully the Frenchman continues to improve.
This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and it is going to be a tight one I believe. Both players have played some strong tennis this week, and I am sure that they will fight for every ball. However, experience should triumph in this match as Richard Gasquet has a hard to predict playing style when you have never met him before. This allows him to dictate play, get on top of points early on, and show everyone that he has been one of the most successful players in tennis history even through he has never won a grand slam.
