Sofia Kenin vs. Maria Sakkari
June 7, 2021 11:00 am EDT
Sofia Kenin (4) meets Maria Sakkari (17) in the fourth round of the 2021 French Open on Monday, June 7th 2021.
Will Sofia Kenin come out here ready to give herself a rematch which was the final of last years French open or will Maria Sakkari use her power and speed to stop her in her tracks as she has one of her best tournaments all year?
Maria Sakkari beat the very in form Elise Mertens in the third round in 3 sets 7-5/6-7/7-2. Maria Sakkari is finding some great consistency and composure here in Paris, which is what she always needed to find success on the WTA Tour as we always knew that she had the game to fight with the biggest players in the world. Sakkari will be looking at the draw, and she knows she can beat anyone in it, but it is a question of doing, rather than believing nowadays. Can the Greek star cause the upset here?
Sofia Kenin beat her fellow American, Jessica Pegula, in the third round in 3 sets 4-6/6-1/6-4. Sofia Kenin was good in those last 2 sets, but she needs to ensure she does not play so badly in the first set now in the business end of the match because she has to save her energy. However, if she does not now against Maria Sakkari, I am not sure whether she will be able to make the comeback win as Maria does not like to lose a match once he wins the first set as she usually wins them.
This is going to be the 4th meeting between both players, with Sofia Kenin having won 2 of their 3 prior encounters. They have always played very tight matches, and I am very sure that it will be no different here in Paris. Both of them have a chance to win this match as they have played well in Paris, however, Maria Sakkari has been in more dominant fashion in my opinion. Therefore, I believe Sakkari will cause the upset and get herself into the quarter finals here in Paris to see if she can make it even further to the semis, her best ever result in a slam.
