Alex de Minaur (4) meets Jurij Rodionov (WC) in the quarter finals of the 2021 Stuttgart Open on Friday, June 11th 2021.

Will Alex de Minaur show us what he can do in faster and flatter conditions where he loves to play his speedy style of tennis, or will Jurij Rodionov get the biggest win of his career under his belt as he looks to cause the upset and shock everyone?

Jurij Rodionov is an unknown player who is only playing his first main draw ATP Tournament at the age of 22. Having focused all of his career on the challenger tour, Rodionov has learned how to fight, and to be honest he has impressed this week in Stuttgart, beating the likes of hard hitters such as Dominik Koepfer. Rodionov has impressed, but he has also not had to do much in his second round match to get into the quarter finals, therefore he will need to prepare a lot to ensure he is ready to play a very tough opponent in Alex de Minaur here.

Alex de Minaur came through a very tight 3-set match against a close friend of his, Jordan Thompson, in the second round, winning 6-7/6-3/6-4. Alex has not played on grass for 2 years now and he will be both happy with that performance, but also know there is work to do to ensure he is at his best for larger tournaments on grass over the next month. Alex is so hard to beat when he is at his best, as he is able to return basically everything, but the thing with Alex is that he needs to manage his energy better during matches as he sometimes gives it too much too early and then ends up paying for it at the end of the match.

This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and unfortunately for the wildcard Rodionov, I don’t see him winning this match. Alex, although the same age, is much more experienced on the main tour and he knows how to play well in these conditions. Rodionov will be happy with how far he got as no one expected him to, but he will go back and prepare for the next Challenger event he will participate in and have a strong chance of competing for the title within.
