Alex de Minaur (2) meets Liam Broady (WC) in the second round of the 2021 Eastbourne Open on Wednesday, June 23rd 2021.

Will Liam Broady be able to cause another upset here in Eastbourne as he looks to make a name for himself at the age of 27, or will Alex de Minaur impress like he did last week in Queen’s where he was able to reach the semis and show us that he can play some solid tennis on grass?

Liam Broady will be very happy with his victory in the first round here in Eastbourne, beating Frances Tiafoe in 2 sets 6-3/7-6. Liam Broady was just in control of the match from start to finish and it was great to see because he is not well known. Frances Tiafoe did not come out as strongly as we all expected him to, but this should not take away from Broady’s performance out there. Broady will want to continue playing this well in order to show that he is deserving of a Wimbledon wildcard as well as the fans support, but he will have to overcome the always tough Alex de Minaur here.

Alex de Minaur will want to build on the momentum he gained last week in Queens where he made the semi finals, and he has shown us all that he is not just an indoor hard court player, but that he can challenge on other fast surfaces such as grass. Alex is still not developing at the same rate as his fellow class such as Tsitsipas, but he is still a very solid player who can challenge anyone on his day. He will be looking at the draw here and know that if he is at his best this week, he can get his 2nd title of the year under his belt for sure.

This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and although Liam is the local guy, is a wildcard who has nothing to lose, and has already caused an upset here, I still don’t see him standing a chance in this match. Alex de Minaur is just a much better player all round. Frances is not consistent, and it was not a huge shock to see him lose, but it would be a big shock to see Alex lose after the amazing week he had last week. I see Liam maybe keeping things tight at moments, but Alex will win this in the end.
