June 24, 2021 12:00 am EDT
Top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face fifth seed Casper Ruud of Norway in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Mallorca Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday June 24th, 2021.
A very exciting match is expected in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Mallorca Open as Daniil Medvedev faces Casper Ruud. Both men have been in outstanding form so far in 2021 and will be aiming to continue their strong starts to the event here as the finalize their Wimbledon preparations. Can the young Norwegian cause the upset here? Or will world number two Daniil Medvedev continue to improve on grass and reach the Semis here in Mallorca?
Daniil Medvedev is currently the world #2 player and is the top seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Russian star has been having an outstanding yet inconsistent season so far this year, starring at the hard court events and struggling during clay season. He got off to a poor start last week in Halle, losing in the First Round to Jan-Lennard Struff and will be hoping to continue his bright start here in Mallorca. He defeated the talented Corentin Moutet in straight sets, and looks like he is slowly figuring out how to move on the surface. In this type of form he should be considered the favorite here over Casper Ruud, but his opponent is talented and can take advantage of any struggles that he may have.
Casper Ruud is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is ranked #15 in the ATP world rankings. The Norwegian has been having a breakout season this year, and has reached two Masters-1000 Semis. Like his opponent Daniil Medvedev, he does not feel fully comfortable on the grass, but has started strongly here in Mallorca, defeating Gilles Simon and Tennys Sandgren without dropping a set. While he is considered the underdog here, he is known as a fighter and once he can work his way into the rally, his powerful groundstrokes will be dangerous on this surface.
This is a tough match to call, due to both players being relatively inexperienced and uncomfortable on this surface. It really is a toss up, so I am going to go with the player with the biggest serve and that is Daniil Medvedev. Big servers have an advantage on this quicker grass surface, and I believe he will hold serve a lot easier than his opponent Casper Ruud. It won’t be easy, but I expect Medvedev to win a tough three setter and advance to his first grass court Semi-Final of his career here at the 2021 Mallorca Open.
