Gael Monfils vs Christopher O'Connell
June 28, 2021 10:00 am EDT
Gael Monfils (13) meets Christopher O’Connell (Q) in the first round of the 2021 Championships on Monday, June 28th 2021.
Will Gael Monfils show us the tennis we have all been waiting for from him as he aims to get back to his best or will it be yet another early round upset against the Frenchman as he meets the Australian qualifier, Christopher O’Connell?
Christopher O’Connell will come out here with some belief in himself because he knows that he has gotten used to the playing conditions here in London and he has been handed a big name opponent right from the start, but he knows Monfils is not at his best anymore. O’Connell has nothing to lose here so if he wants to play his best he needs to not care if he wins or loses and play his best. Christopher has a lot of experience on the challenger tour, but how far can he go on the main tour if he is able to cause the big upset?
Gael Monfils is just nowhere near the form which we know he can play with. Monfils needs to kick his form into place because if he continues like this, he will begin to slip down the rankings and once that happens, his draws will become tougher, his road back to his best will be even harder, and I don’t think he can handle it mentally. Monfils is a player who relies a lot on momentum, so he need to find some here in London if he is going to finally show us what we have all been waiting for from the Frenchman.

This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and it will be a tight match I believe. Monfils needs to get this win under his belt and he knows that himself, but Christopher will also be free to get the job done if he is at his best. I still expect the Frenchman to get the hard fought win, but if he is not able to get the win done in 3 or 4 sets, I don’t know how much confidence we will have in him for the second or third round here in London where everyone wants to impress.
