Daniil Medvedev vs Jan-Lennard Struff
June 29, 2021 6:00 am EDT
Will Struff be able to get his second win over Medvedev on grass this year by causing the big upset or will Daniil Medvedev use the form he found in Mallorca to come out dominating here in the early rounds of the championships?
Jan-Lennard Struff will be looking to find the form which he had in Halle where he was able to beat Medvedev in straight sets in the first round. Struff is a big server and has great tennis, but he has not had much success at Wimbledon, losing to Kukushkin in 2019 early on and now having to meet the no.2 seed in the first round. If this was a best of 3 match, Struff would be very confident as he already beat Medvedev like that, but as it is best of 5, he needs to be even better than he was in Halle if he is to cause the upset here and make his way to the second round.
Daniil Medvedev won the title in Mallorca last week, getting his 11th career title and first on grass. This will give Medvedev the confidence and belief that he can play his best tennis on this surface and perhaps even challenge for the title. Medvedev when confident and determined is so hard to beat, and it will be interesting to see if he can handle two weeks of pressure on grass after going deep in Mallorca the week prior. I believe he can, but he faces tough opposition right from the start here in the big swingin German.

This is going to be the 7th meeting between both players, with Medvedev having won 4 of their 6 prior encounters. Medvedev is a very tough player to beat, but Struff did it just a couple weeks ago. I think that Medvedev is in better form than he was in their last match, but Struff will still be able to perhaps get one set under his belt. At the end of the day, I still see the Russian coming through to make his way to the second round.
