July 2, 2021 8:00 am EDT
Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face the unseeded Colombian Maria Osorio Serrano in the Third Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
World number four Aryna Sabalenka is seeded second at a Grand Slam for the first time, and has her eyes firmly set on a first Grand Slam title. Next up in her path is the unseeded Maria Serrano who has been having a dream week here at the 2021 Wimbledon Champions, advancing to the Third Round after coming through the Qualifying Rounds. Can she cause the shocking upset and keep the dream alive?
Aryna Sabalenka has been dominant on the WTA Tour over the past few years, winning numerous tournaments and seeing her ranking jump into the top 5. However, the one thing that she is missing is a run at a Major, and with the withdrawal of Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka, things are slowly leaning in her favor. Despite her great form this year, she struggled at the warm-up events in Berlin and Eastbourne, but it seems as though she is starting to get more comfortable on the surface. After cruising past Monica Niculescu in the First Round, she was in some serious trouble against Katie Boulter in the Second Round, going a set down before coming back to win. Luckily for her she will face he unseeded Qualifier Mario Serrano in the Third Round, allowing her some more time to safely get more familiar on the grass.
Maria Osorio Serrano has been having a great week so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. A relative unknown on the WTA Tour, she qualified and then backed it up by defeating reputable opponents Anna Kalinskaya and Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach this far. She has shown remarkable poise under pressure, especially in the third set against the seeded Alexandrova, and her confidence will be sky high. These are the first main draw matches that she has ever won, and she will be hoping to go even further. However, she is the massive underdog against the big-hitting Aryna Sabalenka, and it appears that the dream will soon be over.
This is the first time that the women have played each other on the WTA Tour, and this should be a relatively short match. While Maria Serrano has been solid so far here at Wimbledon, she will be no match for the second seed here, and is expected to lose without putting up much resistance. Sabalenka has been struggling so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but she is better than the Qualifier in every way, and this will be exactly the type of dominant win that she needs to build her confidence. Aryna Sabalenka to win in straight sets and advance to the Round of 16.
