Madison Keys vs Viktorija Golubic
July 5, 2021 8:00 am EDT
Madison Keys (23) of the United States will face unseeded Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday July 5th, 2021 at 8:00am EST.
Viktorija Golubic has been on a shocking run so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She has defied all expectations and has reached the Round of 16, where she will face the American star Madison Keys. While Keys is the bigger name, the Swiss player has been in top form and has been dominating her most recent opponents. Can she cause yet another upset and advance to her first Quarter-Final at a major?
Madison Keys is currently ranked #27 on the WTA Tour and is the 23rd seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The American has seen her ranking slide over the past few seasons due to injury and loss of form, but she seems to be getting back on track here at Wimbledon. She has reached the Round of 16 without dropping a set, defeating Katie Swan and Lauren Davis in the first two rounds, and then producing a stunning performance to defeat 13th seeded Elise Mertens in the Third Round. Keys was back to her dominant self, overpowering her Belgian opponent from the baseline with heavy groundstrokes, and she has also served extremely well, gaining a lot of free points. Hitting 28 winners and winning over 70% of your first serve points is a recipe for success, and she enters this match as the favorite, and should be expected to win here if she can keep her momentum going.
Viktorija Golubic is currently ranked #66 in the WTA world rankings, and is a former top 50 player. After seeing her ranking drop outside the top 100, she has improved significantly, and her performances in Eastbourne made the field stand up and take note. After defeating highly rated Veronika Kudermetova in the First Round in three sets she has been absolutely dominant, defeating Danielle Collins and Madison Brengle in straight sets, hardly dropping any games. Her solid baseline game will be a good test for her opponent Madison Key’s powerful groundstrokes, and if she is playing well can have a shot here against the sometimes erratic American. She has also been serving very well and gaining a lot of free points. While she is the underdog here, she shouldn’t be discounted as she is playing career best tennis.

This should be a fairly one sided encounter, and Madison Keys should win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships for the first time. She is simply a better all-around player than her opponent Viktorija Golubic, and should have way too much firepower for her Swiss counterpart to handle. I expect a straight sets win here for the American.
