John Isner vs Evgeny Donskoy
July 21, 2021 9:00 pm EDT
Second seeded John Isner of the United States will face unseeded Russian in the Round of 16 of the Los Cabos Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday July 21st, 2021.
John Isner and Evgeny Donskoy are two veterans of the ATP Tour, and have had varying degrees of success lately. The American has one of the biggest weapons in the sport in his huge serve, and will be looking to that to get him over the line here. The Russian was once a highly rated young player, that has failed to reach the heights that were expected of him. Can he cause the massive upset here and advanced to his first ATP Quarter-Final in years?
John Isner is ranked #39 in the world and is the second seed here in Mexico. The huge serving American is considered the favorite to win the title here at the Los Cabos Open, and will be looking to put a poor Wimbledon performance behind him with a successful week here. The draw has been very kind to him, and he is the big favorite here against Evgeny Donskoy, an opponent he knows well from their two previous meetings. With Isner, the formula is simple. When his serve is clicking, he can be very tough to beat, especially on these quicker courts. Return of his serve has always been his weakness, and he may struggle to break serve here, giving his opponent a small glimmer of hope.
Evgeny Donskoy was once ranked inside the world top 70, but has seen his ranking slide out of the top 150 in recent years. Mostly playing on the Challenger Tour these days, he started brightly here at the Los Cabos Open with a straight sets win over Jason Jung. The Russian is a very solid all around player, but as mentioned before is coming up against a major weapon in the Isner serve. His best bet here is to focus on holding serve and then hope to steal a tiebreak. Despite being the underdog, he is highly experienced and will certainly give it his all here.

This is an easy match to pick, and I am going with John Isner to get the comfortable straight-sets win. Quite simply, he is much better than Evgeny Donskoy at this stage in their careers, and he is not expected to have many issues here. So many things are in his favor, the surface, the weather, his recent form is better, his ranking is higher, the list goes on and on. Expect him to cruise here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals at the Los Cabos Open.
