Cristian Garin vs Hugo Gaston

Fourth seeded Chilean Cristian Garin will face unseeded Hugo Gaston of France in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Swiss Open. The match is scheduled to take place on Friday July 23rd, 2021.

This is a true “David vs Goliath” match here in Gstaad, as Cristian Garin who is one of the premier clay court players on the ATP Tour will face the young Frenchman Hugo Gaston for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Garin has dominated the lower level clay court events on the ATP Tour, and will be gunning for the title here at the Swiss Open as one of the main contenders for the title. Hugo Gaston has shown flashes of potential during his short career but is not yet at the level where he is competing for these titles. Can he cause the huge upset here and advance?

Cristian Garin is ranked number 19 in the world, and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Swiss Open. The Chilean has built a reputation over the past few seasons as one of the best clay court players in the world, and has already won six titles on the surface. After a strong Wimbledon performance he will be looking forward to getting back onto his best surface, and started very strongly here in Gstaad, destroying Marc Polmans in the Round of 16 for the loss of only three games. His big baseline game and improving serve making him a big threat on any surface, but it is his elite movement that truly sets him apart on the clay. He enters this match against Hugo Gaston as the big favorite, and it is unlikely that he will encounter too many problems here.

Hugo Gaston is unseeded here in Gstaad, and is ranked #155 on the Tour. The young Frenchman gained lots of supporters when he made a surprising run to the Fourth Round at the 2019 Swiss Open, upsetting Stan Wawrinka before losing to Dominic Thiem in five very competitive sets. However, he has largely failed to live up to the huge expectations that run created, and still finds himself competing on the Challenger Tour for the most part. He has started strongly here in Gstaad, defeating the in-form Federico Delbonis in the Round of 16 to reach this stage. While he is a promising player, he does not have the firepower needed against an opponent like Cristian Garin, and is the big underdog here.

This will be the first meeting between the two players and I expect a dominant performance from the Chilean here. Quite frankly, he is the far superior player and he will show that here. Hugo Gaston is one to watch for the future, but he is not yet ready to truly compete against these top 40-50 players. Cristian Garin will win and advance to the Semi-Finals here at the Swiss Open.
