Tokyo 2020: Aslan Karatsev vs. Jeremy Chardy 7/26/21 Tennis Prediction

Aslan Karatsev vs Jeremy Chardy

Aslan Karatsev meets Jeremy Chardy in the second round of Tokyo 2020 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.

Who will come out on top of this incredibly entertaining match up between two power hitting players, especially on hard courts? Will it be the veteran Jeremy Chardy or the late blooming breakthrough star of 2021 in Aslan Karatsev?

Jeremy Chardy has shown us that on hard courts he is always a bit of a dark horse in early rounds because he has so much raw power behind hit shots. However, he is also inconsistent so it is difficult for him to build momentum in tournaments to make it consistently into the further rounds. Jeremy is very experienced so he will know where he needs to improve his consistency, but he will also not be as determined and motivated as he used to be when he was a younger man.

Aslan Karatsev will be very happy with his 2 set win over Tommy Paul, beating him 6-3/6-2, and he will also be happy that he is back on hard courts, because this is definitely his best surface. Aslan is the dark horse of the tournament in my eyes because we all remember how good he was in the hard court season this year, reaching the Australian Open semi-final and also winning the Dubai Open. Aslan is such a powerful hitter and he just licks the lines with his balls so he will know that if he is in his groove, he will have a good chance to go far here in Tokyo.

This is going to be the 3rd meeting between both players, with Jeremy Chardy having won all of their prior encounters. Their first encounter doesn’t really count because Aslan had not really made his ATP Tour debut properly and he was not where he is now, and their second match was on grass where Karatsev has not been good because from where he came from, he has never participated in a grass court season. I think we see the Aslan of the first half of 2021 here in Tokyo and he will win this entertaining match by absolutely powering through it.
