Atlanta Open: Nick Kyrgios vs. Kevin Anderson 7/27/21 Tennis Prediction

Nick Kyrgios vs Kevin Anderson
July 27, 2021 8:45 pm EDT

The unseeded pair of Nick Kyrgios and Kevin Anderson will face off in the First Round of the Atlanta Open. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday July 27th, 2021 at 8:20pm EST.

A keenly contested battle is expected as ATP Tour veterans Nick Kyrgios and Kevin Anderson meet in the First Round here at the Atlanta Open. Both men are former top 20 players (with Anderson being in the top 5) but have seen their rankings slide recently. Anderson is finally back to full health after a long battle with injuries, can he continue his momentum from the Hall of Fame Open where he took the title? Or can the supremely talented Aussie get the win in only his ninth match for the year in 2021?

Nick Kyrgios is not seeded here at the Atlanta Open and is ranked #58 in the world. The Aussie has long been considered one of the most talented players in the world, but loses focus very easily and loses matches that he shouldn’t. He has shown a tremendous improvement in his maturity recently, however he has not been playing much tennis since the start of the pandemic. In fact, he has only played eight matches so far this season, winning six of them. His huge serve and forehand are major weapons, and he likely will be looking to those to get him through here against the veteran Kevin Anderson. Kyrgios enters this match as the favorite, but it is hard to fully count on him due to his volatility and his lack of match practice this year.

Kevin Anderson is also unseeded here at the Atlanta Open and is ranked number 75 on the ATP Tour. After a long path to recovery from injuries and surgeries, the former world number 5 seems to be back at his best, and claimed the Hall of Fame Open very recently. Like his opponent Nick Kyrgios, he will be heavily reliant on his big serve to get him through here, as well as his immense experience. His serve will always keep him in the match, so his chances in this match will depend on how well he returns serve, and his movement has been a liability recently. While he is the slight underdog here, he should not be discounted as he has an excellent chance of getting the win here.

This will be a very close match, and it is really a pity that such high-quality players have to meet so early. I am expecting three sets in the match with very little between them, and the match can really go either way. This result will depend on who holds their nerve better in the key moments, and I have to pick Kevin Anderson here. He does not quite have the firepower of his opponent Nick Kyrgios, but he has a level head and is very strong tactically. After a long battle, I expect the South African to get the very close win here, advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Atlanta Open.
