Karen Khachanov meets Ugo Humbert in the quarter final of Tokyo 2020 on Thursday, July 29th, 2021.

Will Karen Khachanov use his experience and past success to get over the line in this tight encounter and give himself a strong chance at a medal in Tokyo, or will Ugo Humbert continue to beat more experienced opponents as he is continuing to make a name for himself?

Ugo Humbert showed great composure during the third round when he was down a set against Stefanos Tsitsipas to get himself over the line in 3 sets 2-6/7-6/6-2. Ugo Humbert will know that he can beat big name players consistently if he is at his best, especially because he is a lefty so he can hurt the majority of players’ weakest side, their backhand side. Ugo Humbert will come into this quarter final knowing that he will have a very good chance of getting close to a medal and bringing pride to France in Tokyo.

Karen Khachanov also maintained his composure during his third round match, beating the very high ranked Diego Schwartzman in 3 sets. If this was towards the end of last year, Diego would have won that match, but Karen made sure that he did not let that happen this year as Diego has not been at his best as of recent. Karen will continue to work hard to get further here in Tokyo, but he is going to have to ensure his game and composure are at their best as he meets the young Humbert.

This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and I expect a very entertaining and tight encounter between both players who have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Karen is definitely a more successful player, but this was mainly in 2017 and 2018. In 2021, Ugo Humbert has been on top of his game and he has continued to rise up the rankings. Humbert seems more determined in my opinion and he can hurt Khachanov’s backhand easily with his lefty forehand as Khachanov usually succeeds on his forehand side in most matches.
