Top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face seventh seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Rogers Cup in Toronto. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday August 13th, 2021 at 7:00pm EST.

A very exciting match is expected between world number two Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz, ranked 13. Both men have been having fine seasons and will be eager to continue that form here. They both had poor Olympic campaigns by their standards and were looking to bounce back in a big way, and have so far done that. Who will get the win here and advance to the Semis here in Toronto?

Daniil Medvedev is the world number two and is the top seed here at the 2021 Rogers Cup. The Russian has cemented his position in the top five of the world rankings over the past few seasons, and is a serious threat for the title at every event that he enters. After struggling a bit in his first match against Alexander Bublik, he put in a dominant performance to defeat James Duckworth 6-2, 6-4 in a match that he controlled from start to finish. While he was never in any danger of losing, he dropped his guard in the second set and allowed Duckworth to come back from 5-1 down before eventually winning the set 6-4. If that happens here against Hubert Hurkacz he likely will lose the set, so he has to make sure that he is more focused throughout. His impressive transition game and ability to go from defense to offense should work well here against the Pole so he enters this match as the big favorite to advance.

Hubert Hurkacz is the seventh seed here at the Rogers Cup and has been having a career season, seeing his ranking jump to a career-high #13 in the world. After winning the Miami Open and reaching the Semis at Wimbledon, he announced himself as one of the top players in the world, and showed that he is capable of challenging at the big events. He has a massive serve and forehand, and has been using those to great effect this season. After receiving a bye and a walkover to reach the Round of 16, he was very rusty as expected and struggled against Nikolosz Basilashvili, but showed tremendous resilience to fight back from a set down to set up this clash with Daniil Medvedev. If he serves well and his groundstrokes are clicking he certainly has the capability to make this match very close and interesting.

This is a rematch of their 2021 Wimbledon clash, where Hubert Hurkacz pulled off the stunning upset, and the Russian will undoubtedly be out for revenge. This should be a very entertaining match between two of the top players in the world this year, and I am expecting a tough battle. I am backing Daniil Medvedev to win here, as he has been the much more consistent player this season and has a bit more versatility than his opponent. He can be very aggressive at times, but when that is not working he can also play elite defence, something that he will likely need against the big-hitting Pole. Expect a tight match, but the Russian will eventually come through, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Rogers Cup in Toronto.
