Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alexander Zverev
August 21, 2021 6:00 pm EDT

Second seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece will face third seeded German Alexander Zverev in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday August 21st, 2021 at 6:00pm EST.

A hugely exciting match is expected here at the Cincinnati Open as Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas meet to decide who will contest Sunday’s Final. Both men have been very impressive this season and along with Daniil Medvedev were the pre-tournament favorites to lift the title here. They have lived up to that billing, who will take it one step further and reach the Final?

Stefanos Tsitsipas is ranked #3 in the ATP world rankings and is the second seed here at the Cincinnati Open. The Greek star has had a very impressive year in 2021, and has established himself as a threat to win every tournament that he enters, even the majors. He won his first Masters-1000 event earlier in the year in Monte-Carlo, and then reached his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, where he was unfortunate not to win against Novak Djokovic after being two sets to love up. He has had a difficult road to the Semis here in Cincinnati, winning tough matches against Sebastian Korda, Lorenzo Sonego and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Against FAA he was in a tough position after losing the second set, but rallied to dominate the third 6-1. He served very well but will know that he cannot afford any concentration lapses like he had against FAA, as his opponent Alexander Zverev will likely not allow him to recover. This will be a very tight match regardless of the outcome, and he will have to be at his best here.

Like his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev has also had an impressive season so far, winning the Masters-1000 event in Madrid and capturing Olympic gold. The German has been very consistent but is yet to translate that success into the majors this year. However, he is starting to find some form ahead of the US Open, which was the scene of his first ever Grand Slam Final last year. He has been outstanding so far here at the Cincinnati Open, and has reached the Semi-Finals without dropping a set. After defeating Lloyd Harris and Guido Pella, he crushed world number 11 Casper Ruud in a devastating performance, dominating the match with his serve where he won almost 80% of the points. He faced only one break point in that match, which in fact was the only break point he has faced all tournament. If he continues to serve like that he has a very good chance of winning here, but as mentioned before this will certainly be very close.

Both players are very familiar with each other, having played a whopping eight times. Surprisingly, Tsitsipas dominates the head to head series 6-2, including a five set win at the French Open this year. Zverev won earlier in the year in Acapulco, and knows that he is capable of beating his opponent. This is a tough one to predict and I expect three sets in the match. It can go either way and comes down to who gets their tactics right on the day, but I have to support Zverev to get the win here. While Tsitsipas has been solid, the German has been dominant so far and I see that continuing. Alexander Zverev should win a tough three setter here, advancing to the Final of the 2021 Cincinnati Open where he will meet the winner of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.
