Coco Gauff vs Magda Linette
August 30, 2021 2:15 pm EDT
Coco Gauff (21) of the United States will face the unseeded Magda Linette of Poland in the First Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday August 30th, 2021 at 2:15pm EST.
Coco Gauff has been turning heads on the WTA Tour since making her debut years ago as a young teenager and still only at 17 years of age has established herself as one of the top players in the world, with the entire world at her feet. It seems to be a matter of when not if she breaks through at a major, and she would love nothing more than at her home slam of the US Open. First up in her path is Magda Linette, a solid yet unspectacular veteran player who will not make things easy. Can she upset the young phenom? Or will Gauff advance as expected as she aims to make a deep run here in Flushing Meadows?
Coco Gauff is ranked #23 on the WTA Tour and is the 21st seed here at the 2021 US Open. The young American is already considered a future world number one at the tender age of 17, and is finally beginning to make her mark in the major events after showing promise for so long. She has been having a fantastic season, winning a title in Parma and then reaching her first WTA-1000 Semi-Final in Rome. At the French Open she reached her first ever Grand-Slam Quarter-Final, and will be hoping to go further here at the US Open. AFter being forced to skip the Olympics with COVID-19 she returned to the Tour with seemingly no negative ill-effects, reaching the Quarters in Montreal. She is considered by us to be a dark horse contender for the title here in New York and we have her at least pegged for a deep run. She is the favorite here against Magda Linette and will be ready and rearing to go.
Magda Linette of Poland is ranked #51 in the WTA rankings and is unseeded at the 2021 US Open. She had an outstanding season in 2020 but has failed to replicate that this year, with her ranking dropping from a career-high #33 to where it is currently. She has played fifteen tournaments so far this season but has only reached the Quarter-Finals three times, which is very disappointing for a player of her quality. However, two of those three have come on US soil in recent weeks, so she does have a bit of momentum behind her. She is the underdog here against local herp Coco Gauff and will have to be at her absolute best to stand a chance.
This is the first time that the two players will be facing off on the WTA Tour, and I expect the young American Coco Gauff to emerge victorious here. She is evolving before our very eyes, and while I don’t think that she is quite ready to challenge for major honors she is not far off. With a stroke of luck we could see her going on an extremely deep run here, and I personally would not be shocked if she was to go all the way, even though it is unlikely. Magda Linette is a solid player but does not have the quality to defeat the American, unless she self-implodes which is not as much of a possibility as it used to be. I’m backing Coco Gauff to win in two tough sets here, advancing to the Second Round at the 2021 US Open.
