Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Evgeny Donskoy
August 30, 2021 11:00 am EDT
Felix Auger-Aliassime (12) of Canada will face Russian Qualifier Evgeny Donskoy in the First Round of the 2021 US Open in New York. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday August 30th, 2021 at 11:00am EST.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is one of the most explosive players on the ATP Tour, and has been teasing tennis fans with his immense potential since bursting onto the Tour as a very young teenager. At only 21 years of age he is firmly established among the top 20 players in the world, but is perhaps best known as possibly the best player to have never won an ATP title. Is this the tournament where he finally breaks out and goes on a deep run at a major? First up for the young Canadian is the Russian Qualifier Evgeny Donskoy. Will FAA brush him aside as expected or will the Russian provide a stern challenge, or possibly cause the upset?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is the twelfth seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #15 in the ATP world rankings. The Canadian has bags of potential that he has been showing flashes of throughout his career but has never really broken out like many expected. Yet to win a tournament after reaching a massive eight finals, he will be desperate to break that streak and will be hoping for a deep run here in New York. He has beaten many of the top players before, but it is a matter of putting it all together mentally for a period of two weeks, something that is not easy to do. He is the big favorite here against Russian Qualifier Evgeny Donskoy, and his dynamic gme is likely to be too much for the Russian to handle. It is important that he gets off to a solid start here if he is to go on a run here in New York.
Evgeny Donskoy was once ranked in the top 70 but currently finds himself outside the top 150. The Russian needed to come through the Qualifying Rounds to get into this event, but did that by the skin of his teeth, not looking impressive at all. He has been handed a very tough draw here and will face the twelfth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the First Round, a match that is the massive underdog in. Even though FAA is very inconsistent in these big events, it is likely that he is too far ahead of the Russian in quality for him to be able to mount a serious challenge here.
This is the first time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, and this will be a very simple one to predict. Simply put, Felix Auger-Aliasime is the much stronger player, and is expected to comprehensively defeat his Russian opponent Evgeny Donskoy. The Russian is a decent player but FAA is one of the best players in the world, and has weapons that will likely blow Donskoy off the court. I am expecting this to be over very quickly, with the talented Canadian advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open without many issues.
