Andrey Rublev vs Pedro Martinez
September 1, 2021 11:00 am EDT
Fifth seeded Russian Andrey Rublev will face the unseeded Pedro Martinez of Spain in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday September 1st, 2021 at 11:00am EST.
Andrey Rublev is one of the favorites for the title here at the 2021 US Open and the aggressive Russian has looked good lately. Next up in his path is the unseeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez who will be feeling some fatigue after his five setter in the First Round. Does Martinez have enough gas left in the tank to make this match competitive? Or will the Russian star get the easy win as expected and advance to the Third Round?
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked #7 in the world and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 US Open. He is one of the top players in the world and is a contender for the title here in New York. He was given a tricky draw, having to face Ivo Karlovic in the First Round, but was able to come away with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory. What makes the win even more impressive was the fact that only one of the sets went to a tiebreak, and he will have been pleased with his return game as he has been known to struggle against big servers. He is playing confident, aggressive tennis and the rest of the draw will be fearful of facing him when he is in this type of form. He next meets Pedro Martinez, an opponent that is very talented but not expected to pose much of a threat here.
Pedro Martinez is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #75 on the ATP Tour. He has had some noteworthy performances this year, in particular reaching the Final in Austria where he lost to Casper Ruud. He was pushed to the max in the First Round by James Duckworth, in a match where he was completely down and out at two sets to love and match point down, but he fought back to win the match. He will be looking to make the most of his good fortune, but he is coming up against one of the best players in the world next in Andrey Rublev, in a match where he is the massive underdog. I am expecting fatigue to be a bit of a factor here, adding to the problems he is already facing here.
This is the first time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a quick and comprehensive win for Andrey Rublev. The Russian is one of the best players in the world and is now playing on his favorite surface, so I find it hard to even comprehend any other scenario unfolding. Pedro Martinez is a very talented player but he is a bit out of his depth here, and will struggle with Rublev’s ultra attacking game and heavy groundstrokes. Rublev will win in straight sets, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open.
