We have a rematch of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics semi final as Pablo Carreno Busta meets Karen Khachanov in the third round of the BNP Parisbas Open on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.

Will Karen Khachanov get the best of Pablo Carreno Busta once again to back up their last encounter, or will Pablo Carreno Busta get revenge for his loss which prevented him from winning at least a Silver medal?

Karen Khachanov beat the up and coming star, Emil Ruusuvuori, in 2 sets 6-2/7-5. This win was good for Karen because he often lets himself play extra long and draining matches against lower ranked opponents which hurt his energy levels for when he needs it the most, in the later round matches. Karen played great for a few months this year, especially at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where he won the Silver medal, but he has struggled again recently. He will have to ensure he’s ready for a long match now in the third round.

Pablo Carreno Busta cruised in his opening match here in Indian Wells, dominating against the qualifier, Emilio Gomez, in 2 sets 6-1/6-4. Pablo Carreno Busta is looking to get some strong wins under his belt here in Indian Wells as he knows that he should be going far in tournaments based on his amazing form he has played with in 2021. However, he will know that he has a much tougher challenge than his opening round match as he now meets Karen Khachanov.

Both players have a tight rivalry, having met 6 times before and having both won 3 matches against each other. This year they have met twice, with both of them having won a match. Although Karen won their last match and it was a big match to win at the Olympics, Pablo is still the much better player and he just had 1 bad day. Karen is like a rollercoaster, some days he’s amazing, some days he’s not. I don’t think he’ll be ready to deal with the long and draining rallies from Pablo here as the Spaniard will get the better of him.
