Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nikoloz Basilashvili
October 15, 2021 3:00 pm EDT

Highest ranked seed left, Stefanos Tsitsipas, meets the 29th seed, Nikoloz Basilashvili, in the quarter finals here at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, October 15th, 2021.

Will Nikoloz Basilashvili come out here and cause another big upset as he aims to get himself into this maiden Masters 1000 Semi-Final, or will Stefanos Tsitsipas get one step closer to potentially getting his second Masters 1000 title?

Nikoloz Basilashvili put on a solid and composed performance against the in form and determined Karen Khachanov, beating the Russian in 2 sets 6-4/7-6. Nikoloz has been getting through the draw quite nicely this week, only losing 1 set along the way and he is now very close to getting into his maiden Masters 1000 Semi-Final. Nikoloz will know that his game is very solid and he has won titles this year, as well as beating Roger Federer, through his great baseline game. However, he meets the highest ranked player left now in Tsitsipas.

Stefanos Tsitsipas had to fight back from a set down against the always tough Alex de Minaur, beating the Australian in 3 sets 6-7/7-6/6-2. The match was entertaining from start to finish, and as we often see with Alex, he gave a lot in the first two sets, and then did not have as much stamina left in the third set which allowed Tsitsipas to dominate. Tsitsipas has gone back to back matches where he came back from a set down, and he will know he cannot afford to let this happen any more as matches will just get tougher and tougher.

Both players have met 2 times before, with both of their matches being won in similar hard court conditions by Stefanos Tsitsipas. They played both matches in 2019, and Nikoloz won a set against the Greek. Nikoloz has been solid this week and he is deserving of a spot in this match, but I am not sure if he is going to get a set under his belt here. Tsitsipas is in great form, has met tougher opponents, and he will not want to let himself lose a set again. Nikoloz is good but he can let himself go when he is losing.
