Garbine Muguruza of Spain will play Czech Barbora Krejcikova in Group Stage action at the 2021 WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico. The match will be played on Friday November 12th, 2021 at 9:30pm EST.

Yet another fantastic matchup is upon us here at the 2021 WTA Finals as former world number one Garbine Muguruza will face 2020 French Open Barbora Krejcikova in a Group Stage match. This match is very important for both players as they each lost their opening match, and a loss here will all but assure the end of their run here. These are two extremely talented players and it is sure to be a close and thrilling match, who will win to keep their hopes alive here in Guadalajara?

Garbine Muguruza is a former world number one and multiple Grand Slam winner. The Spaniard had a mixed season this year but has been in great form recently, entering the WTA Finals with a lot of confidence. However, she was beaten in a three set thriller by Karolina Pliskova after winning the first set. With her level of experience and talent she is the favorite in most matches that she plays, and her game is very well suited to this surface. Her serve will need to improve if she is to overcome Barbora Krejcikova here, as the Czech is a very strong returner and can take advantage.

Barbora Krejcikova has had a breakout season on the WTA Tour in 2021, winning the French Open title. She has since been one of the most consistent players on the circuit with a number of solid results. However, she injured herself during the Billie Jean King Cup and is reportedly not at 100%, which may explain her poor showing in her first match, a straight sets loss to Anett Kontaveit, 6-4. 6-3. She failed to break her opponent once during the match, not even registering a single break point during the entire match. If she is to win here she will have to be much improved here as her opponent is highly experienced and will do what she can do secure the victory.

This should be a very close contest, but that all depends on Barbora Krejcikova’s fitness. She doesn’t seem to be 100% fit, and if that is the case then the odds will obviously favor Garbine Muguruza. Given her first round performance, I am backing the Spaniard here. She played very well, losing a tight three setter that could easily have gone her way. Krejcikova looked to be a step slower than normal and Muguruza should be able to take advantage here, winning in straight sets and keeping her Semi-Final hopes alive here at the WTA Finals.
