Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz meet in the semifinal of the 2022 tennis Madrid Open.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight set win over Hubert Hurkacz that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 81 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 76 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his six break points. Djokovic got 65 percent of his first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point. Djokovic is showing signs of finding his form, and he’s very well rested for this match, considering he didn’t have to play his match against Andy Murray. Djokovic looks to make his 125th final appearance of his career and his 55th ATP 1000 final appearance. Djokovic looks to make his fourth final appearance in Madrid, and he’s 3-3 in previous Madrid semifinal matches. Djokovic has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.

Carlos Alcaraz is coming off a three sets win over Rafael Nadal that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Alcaraz won 67 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Alcaraz won 60 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his five break points. Alcaraz got 56 percent of his first serves in play and saved six of his nine break points. Alcaraz bounced back nicely after losing the second set and turning an ankle. It will be interesting to see how Alcaraz recovers, as swelling usually happens the next day. Alcaraz looks to make his fifth career final appearance and his second ATP 1000 final. Alcaraz is 1-1 in previous ATP 1000 semifinal matches. Alcaraz has won eight straight matches on clay court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

I’m interested to see how Alcaraz and his ankle is holding up, as things usually get worse the next day. Assuming an injury isn’t a big deal, I have to lean toward Alcaraz winning this match. While he’s showing signs of getting back on track, Djokovic still has limited reps overall this season and hasn’t played somebody recently with the athleticism of Alcaraz. The home crowd should also give Alcaraz a major boost.

Give me Alcaraz to advance to the final on home soil.
