Gauff was sloppy with her serve, but she produced six breaks and hit 22 winners. Once again, Gauff hasn’t played great in her first two matches, but she has yet to drop a set and is in the third round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her career. Gauff looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fifth time in her career. Gauff is 4-1 in career grand slam third round matches. Gauff has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.

Kaia Kanepi is coming off a straight set win over Beatriz Haddad Maia that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Kanepi won 83 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Kanepi won 73 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her four break points. Kanepi saved all four of her break points and hit 21 winners in her victory. Kanepi has won four of her five sets to get to this point and has saved 10 of her 14 break points. Kanepi looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time since 2018. Kanepi has made the fourth round of the French Open three times in her career. Kanepi has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

Gauff won the only match against Kanepi, which was 2021 Parma. The match was decided in straight sets and 26 games.

Gauff is the more talented player and should be favored, but she’s been shaky through two matches and at some point the sloppy play is going to cost her a deep run. Kanepi has done a good job of winning the big points through two matches, and she’s an experienced player who isn’t going to let Gauff off the hook if the inconsistent play continues. Also, the first meeting between these two was tight, seeing two tiebreaks.
