Serena Williams will meet Harmony Tan in the First Round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday June 27th, 2022.
The return that everyone has been waiting for – tennis legend Serena Williams is finally returning to the WTA Tour and it will be at the biggest stage possible, Wimbledon. She has been out of the game for over a year due to injury, and it is fantastic to see her back and competing. However, despite all of her accomplishments it will be very interesting to see what sort of form and fitness level she is in, and if her body can hold up for the duration of the tournament. There is no denying that when fit she will be able to compete with the very best with her powerful serve and huge groundstrokes. That being said, it is a huge if and there are serious questions about her fitness that hopefully she can answer soon. She looked very good in the doubles event in Eastbourne but it is hard to gauge how that will translate to the singles.
Harmony Tan is unseeded here at Wimbledon and is ranked #113 in the world. The French player is relatively unknown, and has a lowly 2-6 record at Grand Slam level. She is making her Wimbledon main draw debut here and it will be extremely unnerving for her to play against possibly the greatest player in history on one of the large stadium courts. She has proven that she can hold her own on this surface in recent weeks, taking a set off Tamara Zidansek before reaching the Semi-Finals in an ITF event in Italy. Tan is the massive underdog here, but it will be interesting to see how Serena is feeling and she may have some rust.
It is difficult to predict a match when a player has been out for a year, but this is Serena Williams that we are talking about. She is still one of the very best players in the world when fit, and her experience alone can will her to victory. Harmony Tan is not the type of player that is capable of knocking the seven time champion out, so expect to see a potentially winded and rusty Serena bludgeon her way to the Second Round. She will get better and better as the tournament goes on, so the rest of the field better take notice.
