Aslan Karatsev vs Maxime Cressy
August 9, 2022 11:00 am EDT
Aslan Karatsev will meet Maxime Cressy in the First Round of the 2022 Montreal Open. The match will be played on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.
A very evenly match is upon us here at the Montreal Open as Maxime Cressy does battle with Aslan Karatsev. They have very different game styles, and it will be very interesting to see how this plays out. Will it be the net rushing Cressy or the huge groundstrokes of Karatsev prevailing?
Aslan Karatsev is unseeded at the Montreal Open and is ranked 36th on the ATP Tour. The Russian is well known for his huge hitting from the baseline and as a former Grand Slam Semi-Finalist is a dangerous opponent on hard courts. However, he has been having an inconsistent year. Most recently, he reached back to back Quarter-Finals in Sweden and Germany, but then lost in the First Round of both Kitzbuhel and Washington. He was upset by Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in Washington. Ymer is a solid player, but is not someone that should defeat Karatsev on his preferred surface. If he is able to regain his confidence and form he has a good chance of winning here against Maxime Cressy, but the American has been great this year and will be the favorite despite his lower ranking.
Maxime Cressy is also unseeded here at the Montreal Open and is ranked just below his opponent Aslan Karatsev at #41 in the world. The tall American is a fan favorite, well known for his serve and volley and unique net-rushing style. He recently claimed his first ATP title in Newport, and has really been having a solid year. After a good win over Jack Sock in Washington he was beaten by top seeded Andrey Rublev but put up a good fight, serving very well as usual. In my opinion he is the favorite here even though Karatsev is ranked higher, and it will be a very close match here.
This match should be very close, and it can go either way. Aslan Karatsev is a very solid returner with a big baseline game, but he is facing one of the premier servers in the game in Maxime Cressy, and someone low on confidence like the Russian will not enjoy the barrage of serve and volley tennis that is to come. I am going with Cressy here, simply because he has been having the better season, and is in much better form. Karatsev’s experience gives him a very good shot, but i’m going with Cressy in three tight sets here at the Montreal Open.
