Nick Kyrgios vs Sebastian Baez
August 9, 2022 3:30 pm EDT

Nick Kyrgios will meet Sebastian Baez in the First Round of the 2022 Montreal Open. The match will be played on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

An exciting matchup is expected in the First Round of the 2022 Montreal Open. Nick Kyrgios and Sebastian Baez have been two standout performers on the ATP Tour this season and are sure to put on a show. Can Kyrgios keep his great recent form up? Or can the young and talented Baez cause the upset?

Nick Kyrgios is unseeded here at the Montreal Open and is ranked at a lowly 63. The Australian is ranked far lower than his ability suggests, but has been having a fantastic year, including reaching his first Grand Slam Final at Wimbledon. His good form has carried over into the Washington Open where he is currently in the Semi-Finals at the time of writing. What is most impressive is his mentality, he is fired up and focusing right through matches, which is a scary sight for his opponents. He impressively saved multiple match points and fought from a set down against Frances Tiafoe in the Quarter-Finals at the Citi Open, and looks in great form. His immense firepower from the baseline and his big serve can propel him to victory on this surface, and he enters this match as the favorite against the tricky youngster Sebastian Baez.

Sebastian Baez is unseeded here at the Montreal Open, like his opponent Nick Kyrgios, and is ranked at a career-high #31. The Argentine has really turned heads with his performances this season but has seen his form dip recently. After reaching the Final in Gstaad where he lost to Francisco Cerundolo he has lost three matches in a row, a stunning run of form for the usually consistent Baez. His main strengths which are his movement and consistency are not as effective on this surface, and while he is ranked higher than his opponent Nick Kyrgios, it is hard to not consider him the underdog due to the Aussie’s hard court capabilities.

Nick Kyrgios matches are generally risky propositions from a betting point of view as he has been known to be very inconsistent with his performances and effort levels. However, he seems to be a new man this season, and the hope is that the Wimbledon performance will propel him to new heights. His run to the Final will make many consider him to be one of the favorites for the US Open, and he will be looking to keep his form going until then. Sebastian Baez is a very tricky opponent and is exactly the type of player that can frustrate the Australian star, but I am expecting him to win here. On this surface he is just unstoppable at times, and I see him having too much for Baez here. Kyrgios to win with confidence.
