Italian Jannik Sinner will meet Kyle Edmund in the First Round of the 2023 Australian Open. The match will be played on Monday January 16th, 2023.

Jannik Sinner is the 15th seed at the Australian Open and is ranked 16th in the world rankings. The young Italian has solidified his spot in the world, even breaking into the top 10 for stretches last year. Long touted as one of the best young players around, he has gone from strength to strength, winning four titles in 2021 and one in 2022. He will be aiming to match his performance here last year where he reached the Quarter-Finals, and has looked solid so far to start 2023, defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis and his current opponent Kyle Edmund in Adelaide last week before losing to eventual Finalist Sebastian Korda. Sinner should be considered the big favorite here in this match, and is a dark horse candidate to go all the way.

Kyle Edmund is unseeded here at the Australian Open and after a torrid past few years with injuries finds himself ranked outside the top 500 in the rankings. This is not an accurate representation of his quality however, with the Brit once ranked as high as #14 less than five years ago. There isn’t much to gauge his form on, but he lost both of his matches so far this year, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in this match against one of the very best in Jannik Sinner. While he is a major underdog here, he shouldn’t be totally written off given his experience, however it would take nothing short of a miracle for him to get something out of this one.

Given all the facts it is very difficult to imagine any other outcome than a straight sets win for Jannik Sinner. He has been one of the very best players in the world for the past two seasons and is rounding into form. His power game is tailor made for these courts and I am expecting him to go deep into this draw. Kyle Edmund is highly experienced and won’t be taken lightly, but the difference in quality is staggering at the moment. The Brit may make it interesting early on, but expect the young dynamo to quickly overpower him and sail into Round two here at the Australian Open.
