Marton Fucsovics vs Botic van de Zandschulp
January 11, 2022 2:20 am EDT
Eighth seed Marton Fucsovics of Hungary will play Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the First Round of the Adelaide Open. The match will be played on Tuesday January 11th, 2022 at 12:20am EST.
The 2022 ATP season is upon us and the Adelaide Open is one of the final chances for players to find some form ahead of the Australian Open. Marton Fucsovics and Botic van de Zandschulp will face off in the First Round in what is expected to be a very high quality match. Who will advance?
Marton Fucsovics is a very talented player but his concentration issues have long prevented him from reaching the heights that he possibly could have. He will be hoping that 2022 is the year that he finally breaks through and fulfils that potential, and he is using the Adelaide Open with his intentions being a deep run at the Australian Open. However, the number eight seed has been handed a very difficult draw and will face US Open Quarter-Finalist Botic van de Zandschulp in the First Round. Fucsovics has the game to get the win here and will enter as the slight favorite, but can he keep focused for the entire match?
Botic van de Zandschulp has been one of the most improved players on the circuit over the past year and broke through last season when he reached the Quarter-Finals at the US Open. The Dutchman is extremely solid from both sides of the court and is extremely consistent. His opponent Marton Fucsovics is more experienced and has had the better career so far, but Botic is the type of player than can frustrate Fucsovics, and lead him to commit unforced errors. Van de Zandschulp is ranked lower and many consider him the underdog here, but this may be closer than expected.
This will likely be a very tough and long match, with a lot of big hitting and winners involved. Both men are very capable of winning here so it is close to call. Marton Fucsovics has the higher upside, but I am going with Botic van de Zandschulp to edge the win here. He is the more consistent and level-headed player, and I think that that will be the difference here. It will be very close, but the Dutchman will win here and move on.
