Coco Gauff and Alison Van Uytvanck meet in the second round of the 2022 tennis French Open.
Coco Gauff is coming off a straight set win over Rebecca Marino that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Gauff won 67 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Gauff won 59 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 12 break points. Gauff wasn’t at her best, as she had 10 double faults, faced 12 break points and received a warning from the umpire for possible in match coaching. Still, Gauff finding a way to dominate still and win in straight sets is impressive. Gauff looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her career. Gauff is 5-3 in previous grand slam second round matches. Gauff has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
Alison Van Uytvanck is coming off a win over Ann Li that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Van Uytvanck won 57 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Van Uytvanck won 49 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her seven break points. Van Uytvanck got lucky, as she was losing that match, but her opponent was forced to retire in the second set due to a shoulder injury. Van Uytvanck now looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since Lyon. Van Uytvanck hasn’t made the third round of a grand slam since the 2018 Wimbledon. Van Uytvanck has made the third round of the French Open just once, which came in 2015 when she made the quarterfinals. Van Uytvanck has lost seven of her last nine matches on clay court.
There’s no previous match history between these two players.
Gauff has to play better, but her finding ways to win even when she doesn’t have it is a sign of serious growth. She’ll be fine. I’m not sure if we can say the same for Van Uytvanck, who probably isn’t even here if her opponent doesn’t get injured. Van Uytvanck has been rough on clay over the years, and she has little to no success in grand slam play for her career. This should be a routine match for the young American.
Give me Gauff in straight sets.
