Egor Gerasimov meets Jiri Vesely in the second round of the 2020 Astana Open in what is going to be a very tight and interesting encounter on Wednesday, October 28th 2020. Will Gerasimov continue to play superbly or will Vesely be able to tame him?
Egor Gerasimov came through a very tight 3-set victory over Lloyd Harris in the first round of the Astana Open, coming back from a set down to win it in 3. Gerasimov has had some solid play in the last couple of weeks and perhaps some results which should have gone his way did not. Last week at the Cologne 2 Open he was 1 set and 6-5 up and serving for the match against Felix Auger Aliassime but eventually was broken and lost the 2nd and 3rd set both in tiebreaks. Other than that performance, Gerasimov has been continuously improving and showing us that he is not to be underestimated.
Jiri Vesely came through a tight 2-set victory over Tennys Sandgren, winning 6-4/7-6. Vesely has a solid game when he is on top of his game and he will be hard to beat in the opening rounds of these smaller tournaments. Vesely will have to ensure he is on top of his game here as he is not as good of a server or as good of a baseline Allier as Egor Gerasimov and he will definitely need to ensure he is concentrated on wearing his opponent down with his movement.
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Jiri Vesely leading the head to head 1-0. The last time these two met Vesely was in much better form and the much better player, but since then the tables have turned. Gerasimov is able to compete with some of the best players in the world whilst the same cannot be said about Vesely at the moment. Gerasimov will be confident after his win over Lloyd Harris and he knows that if he is on top of his game, he should be able to book his spot in the quarterfinals.
