Borna Coric will meet Radu Albot in the First Round of the 2022 Korea Open in Seoul. The match will be played on Monday September 26th, 2022.
Borna is the 6th seed here at the Korea Open and is ranked 26th in the world. After struggling for years with injuries and a dramatic loss of form, the Croatian produced the shock of the year when he seemingly came from nowhere to win the 2022 Cincinnati Open. It was a strong field too, and he beat the likes of Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime en route to the title, in fact beating a higher ranked player in every round. He will have been disappointed by his soft Second Round loss at the US Open to Jenson Brooksby and will be hungry to get back to business here. He has been given a relatively comfortable opening round match here against Radu Albot, but should not underestimate the veteran Moldovan.
Radu Albot is a former top 40 player who has struggled badly in recent times. The Moldovanrecently broke back into the top 100 in the world by winning a Challenger title last week, and has had a relatively successful season in 2022, albeit mostly on the Challenger Tour. While he is a shell of his former self, he obviously is in good form now, crushing Lukas Rosol for the loss of only two games in the Final in Istanbul, but he will need to take his game to another level if he is to overcome world number 26 Borna Coric. He is the massive underdog here and it will take a small miracle for him to win here.
While it is tough to trust Borna Coric fully due to his struggles over the past few years, we need to look no further given that he reminded us of his huge upside just a few weeks ago. He is the much better player here, and while many still think the Cincinnati title was a fluke (myself included) there is no doubt that he is levels above an aging Radu Albot. Barring something strange happening, back Coric to win here with confidence.
