Cameron Norrie will meet David Goffin in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Lyon Open. The match will be played on Wednesday May 24th, 2023.
Cameron Norrie is the second seed here at the 2023 Lyon Open and is ranked 14th in the world. The solid lefty has been outstanding over the past couple seasons, winning his maiden Masters-1000 title and breaking into the top 10 for the first time a few months ago. His form on clay has been very inconsistent, with some early round losses mixed in with some huge victories. The defending champion here in Lyon, he has a solid 14-5 record on the season on clay but lost in the fourth round last week in Rome, albeit to Novak Djokovic. He is poised for a run at Roland Garros once the draw goes his way, and will be hoping for another solid week of preparation here.
David Goffin is unseeded here at the 2023 Lyon Open and is ranked 113th in the world after a very inconsistent past few seasons. Once ranked as high as #7, he is nowhere near the player that he once was but is capable of good tennis now and then. He cruised through his opener over Qualifier Alvaro Lopez San Martin, breaking at will en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. His game relies on his elite court coverage and consistency, things that have waned over the years. He is the massive underdog here against Cameron Norrie, and will have to pull every ounce of his experience to have a chance here.
This should be smooth sailing for Cameron Norrie, although we should be wary of the veteran David Goffin. He has struggled mightily over the past few seasons, and while I think that he will keep it close early on, will fade away after a while. Norrie has never lost to the Belgian, and on current form he should be backed to extend that record to 3-0, moving on to the Quarters here at the 2023 Lyon Open.
