Britain’s Cam Norrie will meet American Maxime Cressy in the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Eastbourne International Tennis Championships. The match will be played on Thursday June 23rd, 2022.
Cam Norrie is currently ranked #12 on the ATP Tour and is the top seed here at the Eastbourne International. Britain’s number one enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, breaking into the top 10 and claiming his first ATP-1000 event at Indian Wells. He has had yet another solid yet unspectacular season this year, and will be hoping to find some form ahead of his home Grand Slam, Wimbledon. Norrie was bounced out in the First Round in Queen’s by the experienced Grigor Dimitrov, but rebounded well to defeat the talented Brandon Nakashima in straight sets to begin his Eastbourne campaign. Norrie’s exceptional movement and consistent baseline game make him a force on any surface, and despite his lack of a weapon enjoys the quicker grass surface. He is the big favorite here against Maxime Cressy but will be very wary of the American’s massive serve and unique serve and volley game.
Maxime Cressy is unseeded here at the Eastbourne International and is ranked #60 in the world. The huge serving American is one of the only pure serve and volleyers on the ATP Tour and it would seem that grass is his ideal surface. He looked good in Halle, getting through the Qualifying Rounds before losing to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz in a titanic three set battle. So far here in Eastbourne he has been outstanding, defeating heavily favored opponents Reilly Opelka and Dan Evans in straight sets. He is yet again the underdog against Cameron Norrie, but if his serve is working well then anything is possible. His return has noticeably improved, but it is still nowhere near the level that it needs to be to compete with the very best.
This will be a very difficult match, but I expect Cameron to come through in two tight sets. He will struggle to break Cressy’s serve, but should comfortably hold his own. Anything can happen in a tiebreaker, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see Cressy steal a set, but I don’t see him having the ability to focus for the entire match without dropping serve to the elite returning Norrie. Cameron Norrie will win here, moving on to the Semis at the Eastbourne International. The overs on games played is a good shout as well, expect at least one tiebreaker in the match.
