Top seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia has struggled to reach this point here at the 2023 Halle Open, but will be pleased to reach this far nonetheless. After a disappointing opening round loss at the Rosmalen Open, he was able to defeat Marcos Giron to avoid the same fate here. Next up, he needed three sets to defeat Laslo Djere in the Round of 16, eventually winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in a sloppy match. He will have to be much improved here if he is to get past Roberto Bautista Agut here, and his serve cannot be inconsistent here as his groundstrokes have been.
Roberto Bautista Agut is ranked 23rd in the world and is the 8th seed here at the the Halle Open. The veteran Spaniard is as reliable as they come on all surfaces, but there is no doubt that grass is his weakest. RBA had a battle in the Round of 16 where he defeated the talented American Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 7-6. He will have been delighted to win consecutive matches for the first time in months, and seems to finally be shaking the rust off. He is the slight underdog here, but everyone knows his quality, especially Medvedev who has lost to him four times before.
This should be a classic, and I expect a very high quality match. Daniil Medvedev is the obvious favorite on paper, and has way more upside than Roberto Bautista Agut at this stage in their careers. However, RBA has made a career on hard work and grit, and won’t go down without a fight. He also has the edge in the head to head, leading 4-2. All things considered, I am going with Medvedev here but it will be a dogfight. His serve should be the difference here, and if it is firing, he should be able to win this match and move on here at the 2023 Halle Open.
