Dominic Thiem will meet Laslo Djere in the First Round of the 2022 Tel Aviv Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday September 26th, 2022 at 10:30am EST.

Dominic Thiem is ranked #182 in the world, a far cry from the heights of a few years ago, but seems to be making his way forward now after a tough couple of years due to injury. The Austrian star has shown flashes of his best over the past few months, recently reaching the Final of a Challenger and a few other notable results across the hard court season. He had mixed results last week in Metz, impressively defeating Richard Gasquet before falling to defending champion Hubert Hurkacz. It is evident that Thiem is still building his confidence, as the strokes still seem to be there. If he can string a couple more decent results at ATP level together he should soon re-enter the top 100, and he has a golden opportunity here in Tel Aviv, facing the tough but inconsistent Laslo Djere in the First Round.

Laslo Djere is unseeded here at the Tel Aviv Open and is ranked 67th on the ATP Tour. The Serbian is much more comfortable on the clay but has had had some decent results on hard courts throughout his career. While he is solid all around, he really struggles with consistency and it is hard to know what to expect from him. A tough week last week in Metz will not have inspired much confidence from him, losing in the Qualifiers to Stan Wawrinka. Despite his higher ranking, he is the betting underdog here against Dominic Thiem and it is not hard to see why.

This is a tough match to call between two players in Laslo Djere and Dominic Thiem that are extremely hard to trust. Thiem obviously has the better pedigree and more upside, but he has been extremely inconsistent this season and we don’t know when a vintage performance will occur. Laslo Djere has been more consistent with his performances but not by much, and he is tough to trust also. I am expecting a pretty sloppy match overall, and in long, close matches I tend to lean with experience. Give me Thiem to grind out a tough win here at the Tel Aviv Open.
