Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Alex de Minaur (2) in the final of the 2021 Eastbourne Open on Saturday, June 26th 2021.
Who will come out on top between two in form players in 2021? Will it be the fast court loving Aussie, Alex de Minaur, or the slow loving passionate Italian, Lorenzo Sonego, to win their second ATP Tour title of the year?
Lorenzo Sonego had to fight in his semi final win against Max Purcell, eventually winning the match in 3 sets, 6-1/3-6/6-1. To be honest, Lorenzo should have not let that match go as far as it did, it should have been over in 2 sets. However, Lorenzo took on the second set too easily thinking he’d cruise like he did in the first set. Lorenzo is a strong player and he will adapt quickly when the going gets tough, but he can’t afford to do this against Alex de Minaur who will come out to fight, and once he is ahead, he will not give up his lead.
Alex de Minaur was very dominant in his semi final match, beating Soonwoo Kwon in 2 sets 6-3/7-6. Kwon was somewhat more competitive in the second set, but that was not enough to down the in form Aussie. Alex will want to continue this strong form which he has been playing with over the last two weeks on grass courts, especially because if he wins the title here, he will enter Wimbledon next week with a lot more confidence and momentum. Alex will need to be as strong as he has been all week as he now meets Lorenzo Sonego who will also be giving it his all.
This is going to be the 2nd meeting between both players, with Alex de Minaur having won their only prior encounter. They are both very determined and passionate players who leave it all out on the court every time. However, only one will win the title. Because we are on grass, I see Alex having the edge here. Lorenzo likes higher bouncing surfaces, but that does not mean he cannot do well. Alex, on the other hand, thrives in these conditions, and he will be very well positioned to win his second title of the year and gain a lot of momentum.
