Frances Tiafoe vs Andrey Rublev 9/7/22 US Open Tennis Picks, Predictions, Odds

Andrey Rublev and Frances Tiafoe meet in the quarterfinal of the 2022 tennis US Open.

Andrey Rublev is coming off a straight set win over Cameron Norrie that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Rublev won 80 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Rublev won 72 percent of his total service points and converted on 4 of his 8 break points. Rublev got 67 percent of his first serves in play and hit 11 aces. All 4 of Rublev’s matches have either been won in straight sets or 5 sets. Rublev looks to make his first career grand slam semifinal, as he’s 0-5 in previous quarterfinal matches. This is Rublev’s third US Open quarterfinal trip. Rublev has won 7 of his last 10 matches on hard court.

Frances Tiafoe is coming off a straight set win over Rafael Nadal that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 76 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on 5 of his 8 break points. Tiafoe got 50 percent of his first serves in play and hit 18 aces. Tiafoe now has 8 career wins over top-10 players, with his most recent effort being his first win of the year. Tiafoe looks to make his first career grand slam semifinal, as he lost his only other quarterfinal appearance in the 2019 Australian Open. Tiafoe has won 6 of his last 8 matches on hard court.

They’ve split the previous 2 meetings. Tiafoe won a 2021 US Open match in 5 sets, and Rublev won this year in Indian Wells in straight sets.

Rublev is probably the slightly more trustworthy player in this spot given his experience in these sorts of matches, but both of these guys are crazy talented but can be shaky in the unforced error department. I am concerned about Tiafoe in a letdown spot, as he was nearly crying after his win over Nadal. With all that said, the difference here is probably the home crowd, as Tiafoe plays to the crowd and everybody will be behind him here.

Give me the American to get the job done.
