Lorenzo Sonego will meet Cristian Garin in the Round of 16 at the 2023 BMW Open in Munich. The match will be played on Thursday April 20th, 2023.
Cristian Garin is unseeded here at the 2023 BMW Open and is ranked 86th on the ATP Tour. The Chilean was once considered one of the very best clay court players in the world, but has seen his form and fitness dramatically decline over the past few seasons. Regardless, he is still a very dangerous opponent on this surface, and should not be taken lightly. He was in good nick in his opening round, defeating Markus Topo 6-4, 6-2, serving very well and controlling the match from the baseline. His opponent Lorenzo Sonego is the favorite here, but this could easily be an upset.
Lorenzo Sonego is the sixth seed here at the BMW Open, and is ranked 45th in the world. The Italian is capable on all surfaces, and has been steadily consistent over the past few seasons. He was surprisingly pushed to the limit in the First Round by Quentin Halys, coming very close to losing before rebounding to win in three sets. He knows that he will have to be much improved here against Cristian Garin, who is capable of beating anyone on his day.
This match will be a lot closer than the rankings suggest, and I am going with the underdog here, Cristian Garin. He looked to be in good form and was confident in his First Round win, while Sonego struggled. Garin has been low on confidence recently but has the game to dominate almost anyone on this surface, and I am backing him to get the job done here at the 2023 BMW Open.
